AFinLA Autumn Symposium 2014
Second Circular and Call for Papers
The annual Autumn Symposium of the Finnish Association of Applied Linguistics (AFinLA) will be held at the University of Jyväskylä on 14–15 November 2014. The theme of the symposium is “Flows of language learning”.
Language learning is a dynamic process – to borrow a well-known metaphor, one that can be described as stepping into a flow. Individual flow experiences may form a meaningful part of learning. Different flows also influence and structure the research fields concerning language pedagogies and second and foreign language learning: there are both mainstream flows and different types of cross-currents. We hope that the conference theme will inspire lively and versatile discussion on flows in language learning, teaching and research, and welcome proposals for presentations on all areas of applied linguistics.

- Lourdes Ortega, Georgetown University, USA: Critical Flows in SLA for the 21st Century
- Paula Kalaja, University of Jyväskylä: Research on Beliefs about Language Learning and Teaching conducted within the Contextual Approach: Exploring the Possibilities of Narratives

The working methods of the symposium will be individual presentations, colloquium presentations, poster presentations and workshops.
Individual presentations and posters
The abstracts for both individual presentations and posters are limited to max. 300 words, including references. The time allotted to section papers will be 20 minutes + 10 minutes for discussion. Maximum poster size is A0.
Colloquium
Colloquium is a session including several thematically connected presentations. The duration of a colloquium is either 90 or 180 minutes. The organizer(s) of a colloquium are asked to submit a description of the theme of the colloquium (max. 500 words). The description should include a list of the contributors and their titles in the order in which the presentations will be given. In addition, all colloquium contributors are required to submit individual abstracts (max 300 words) in which they indicate the name of the colloquium in which they are going to present.
Workshops
Workshops are sessions in which the participants work e.g. with data or around a shared topic. The duration of a workshop is either 90 or 180 minutes. Unlike colloquia, workshops do thus not include conference presentations. The organizers of workshops are asked to submit a description of the workshop (max. 500 words). The organizers are responsible for the work methods used in the workshop.

Important dates
The deadline for the submission of abstracts and colloquia and workshop proposals is 15 September 2014.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 30 September 2014.
The registration will open on 30 September 2014.
The deadline for the registration of presenters is 15 October 2014.

When submitting your proposal via the online form, you will be asked whether your proposal is linked to the theme(s) of the AfinLA Special Interest Groups (SIG). This information is only used for planning the conference program and has no impact on abstract acceptance. If your proposal is not connected to the themes of the SIGs, please select the option ‘other topic’. The main languages of the symposium are Finnish and English, but presentations in other languages are also welcome.
