We are living in a time of significant changes when our society is, among other things, shaped by the quick development of artificial intelligence, tensions in international politics and challenges in sustainable development. The theme of the symposium, Language as a key to a changing world, invites us to reflect on the role of language and the viewpoints offered by the study of language in various current changes.

The presentations in the symposium may explore for instance the following questions: What is the role of language, communication and interaction in societal change? How can applied linguistics help us understand and have an impact on the changes happening in the world? How do rapid advances in technology shape the ways we interact, learn and teach languages, or assess language skills? In what ways does language unite and separate people, build communities and produce (in)equality? How do societal changes affect professional language and language skills, and what kinds of possibilities for multidisciplinary cooperation do such changes open for applied linguists?

In addition to presentations connected to the theme of the symposium, proposals for presentations on other topics in applied linguistics are also welcome.
